Game-based workshops

Polarisation is rising. Societies are drifting apart, and radical narratives are gaining influence. But how do these divisions form — and why do people often not realize they are becoming part of them?

To make the dynamics of polarisation tangible, we developed a hands-on role-playing game based on agent-based modeling. With nothing more than paper, scissors, paper clips, and about an hour, 10–30 participants step into the roles of citizens in the fictional city of Bridgestone to debate a controversial public issue. As the discussion unfolds, they experience firsthand how quickly groups form, positions harden, and divisions deepen — and how openness and perspective-taking can reopen dialogue.

Designed for universities and schools, the game brings the mechanics of polarisation to life.

What you’ll need to play the game:

  • 10-30 participants
  • 45-90 minutes
  • paper printouts and paper clips
  • flipchart or blackboard to track the progress of the game

The game can be used as a standalone activity, independent of the discipline, or incorporated into courses in sociology, political science, media studies, social policy and more. You’ll find the full toolkit for the game, including the game scenario and the printouts below (in progress).
